The Devon Laser Clinic provides cosmetic treatments using a range of non-invasive laser and non-laser techniques.

The clinic was established by Sara Carter in March 2002. Sara is a Registered Nurse who has been qualified since 1996. She gained a BTEC in Laser and Intense Light Hair Removal in 2002.

We specialise in using medical lasers for the purpose of hair and thread vein removal. Two types of lasers are used in our clinic. A Cynosure Alexandrite laser is used for hair and pigmented lesions removal and a Polaris Nd:YAG laser is used for thread vein removal, hair removal to very dark skins and for the laser facials.

Laser Tattoo Removal

At the Devon Laser Clinic we use a Polaris Q-switched Ruby laser for tattoo removal. This is a class 4, active medical laser which means it has very high peak powers delivering its energy in a much more effective pulse than many of the cheaper lasers that can be found today.

The Q-Switched Ruby Laser is suitable for fair skinned persons for the removal of tattoos which contain mostly black, blues and greens. Some inks and colours will not respond to any laser.

The laser works by firing a beam of light through the skin in extremely short pulses. The light is absorbed by the tattoo ink creating a reaction which breaks down the ink into very tiny particles. This allows the body’s defence mechanisms to take over and gradually remove the pigment.

Because each pulse is so short (typically 25 billionths of a second!) and is targeted directly onto the pigment, there is normally no lasting damage to the skin or surrounding tissue. The whole procedure is repeated several times, usually at about six to eight weekly intervals, so allowing time for the body to remove as much pigment as possible.

Simple amateur tattoos may be removed in just a few treatments but professional tattoos may require 10-15 treatments.


The microdermabrasion technique works with microcrystals, which are hard enough to disrupt unwanted tired skin cells, but small enough not to do any damage or even cause discomfort or pain. The technique involves propelling the microcrystals across the skin’s surface, removing only the top layer of skin cells.

Microdermabrasion is especially suited to aging skin, dry, oily, dull, congested and blemished skins, open pores, fine lines and acne.

Expected results are an overall improvement in your skin’s appearance.

Many people report that their skin seems softer, tighter, smoother and younger looking.

It is recommended that for best results, a course of treatment is necessary, although improvements will be apparent after every treatment.

Many people have a “one off” treatment a few days before a special occasion so that their skin looks at its best.

Glycolic Peels

At the Devon Laser Clinic we use Jan Marini products for our Glycolic acid peels.

Glycolic acid is shown to:

  • Remove buildup of dead skin cells and debris

Jan Marini has created the Bioglycolic products to provide the ultimate resurfacing agents in combination with additional scientifically calculated components to deliver unparalleled skin care management.

As we age, the rate of skin growth slows. The top layer of the skin (the epidermis) thins yet the layer of dead cells on the surface (stratum corneum) becomes more adhesive slowing the natural exfoliation process and creating necrotic tissue build up.

Among other things, glycolic acid loosens the glue-like attachments, or cellular cement, that are characteristic of many skin conditions such as acne, photodamage (environmental aging), and hyperpigmentation. This non-invasive lifting of the cells in the stratum corneum enables glycolic acid to act as a phenomenal resurfacing agent that can immensely improve the appearance of the skin.

Laser Facials

At the Devon Laser Clinic, we combine microdermabrasion with facial laser treatment for the ultimate in facial rejuvenation. The microdermabrasion treatment will gently sand away dead skin cells, then the Nd:YAG laser will be used for photo rejuvenation which will promote collagen renewal in the skin and helps to soften fine lines.

The dual regimen is best performed as a series of treatments and has been used to target mild-to-moderate signs of aging skin and acne scarring.

Laser light can also kill bacteria in the skin which can help with the treatment of acne. There is virtually no downtime, but sunscreen needs to be worn for at least one month after treatment.

IPL Skin Rejuvenation – Pigment Lesion – Acne Treatment

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) systems release precisely controlled short pulses of filtered light that stimulate the fibroblast cells that produce collagen and elastin deep within the dermis, increasing skin elasticity and strength, making the skin look softer and smoother.

In addition, specific lesions such as thread veins, age spots and freckles can be targeted resulting in a more uniform complexion. The skin becomes firmer, appears more radiant and enlarged pores are reduced.

Sun spots, liver spots, freckles and other unwanted pigmentation are often associated with skin ageing and over exposure to the sun or sunbeds. From the age of around 40 the skin is less able to regenerate from sun exposure and age spots start to appear. Generally these age spots pose no health risk, however they can be unsightly and create a patchy, less youthful appearance.

Freckling and age spots are successfully lightened or removed with either Laser or Intense Pulse Light (IPL).

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) skin rejuvenation and pigment removal treatment is a relatively quick and easy procedure. Age spots and freckles can be lightened or removed in as little as one to three treatment sessions. The light targets areas of excess pigment safely breaking down the excess melanin.

The sun spots or freckles darken in the first few days after treatment and then the excess melanin sheds naturally away.

The Lynton Luminette Intense Pulsed Light system is used to progressively improve the skin tone and texture in the following ways:

  • Stimulates collagen and elastin production, deep within the dermis, increasing skin elasticity and strength.
  • Reduces pigmentation problems, giving skin a more even colour.
  • Reduces fine thread veins, thereby reducing general skin redness (known as Rosacea).
  • IPL treatment kills the bacteria that causes infection and the formation of spots.

Acne Treatment And Skin Rejuvenation

For maximum Skin Rejuvenation/Acne reduction results we recommend alternating IPL treatment with Glycolic Peels or Microdermabrasion. This will dislodge the debris of dead skin cells on the surface of your skin allowing the laser/IPL light to penetrate further.

Rosacea Treatment – IPL – Intense Pulsed Light

Rosacea is a progressive, inflammatory vascular disorder which primarily affects the central part of the face and is recognised by facial flushing/ blushing, pustules and thread veins.

Intense Pulsed Light treatment has been shown to be very effective in Rosacea treatment. It works by a process called photothermolysis. This light therapy selectively destroys the abnormal vessels that cause the Rosacea effect, allowing thicker walled micro vessels to be laid down.

While it is not possible to cause Rosacea (since it is believed to be largely genetic), it is possible to bring about an onset of symptoms and to accelerate this progressive condition.

The most common triggers include but are not limited to, sun exposure, stress, hot or cold weather, excessive exercise, alcohol, and spicy foods.

These all have an effect on the thread veins and facial redness present in Rosacea sufferers.

Laser Thread Vein Reduction

Thread veins (or telangiectasia) are small superficial red, purple or blue veins which may appear anywhere on the body, but most commonly on the face, chest and legs.

Thread veins develop for a number of reasons such as hormonal changes, hereditary factors, medications such as steroids, exposure to UV light and extremes of temperature.

The appearance of spider/thread veins on the face and legs can cause embarrassment or self-consciousness for many individuals.

Laser therapy is a proven technology for treating thread veins. Thread vein removal or reduction is most effective on very fine veins of less than 2.5mm in diameter.

Laser Hair Reduction

Laser therapy is a non-invasive and extremely effective therapy which can significantly reduce the growth of dark unwanted hair. Unwanted hair from excessive or inappropriate hair growth may appear for a variety of reasons such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. (PCOS) This can cause immense distress and affect self esteem.

Laser hair removal takes an average of 6-8 treatments to achieve optimal results. Treatments are normally spaced 6-8 weeks apart.

Females with PCOS or who are transitioning through puberty, pregnancy and the menopause might require more treatments due to changing hormone levels. Men generally require more treatments than women due to testosterone levels.
